Jack Coates

Short Biography

Jack Coates was born in 1944.He had wanted to meet Rock Hudson since he was thirteen and had gone to see Giant in his neighborhood movie house in Phoenix.When Jack finished high school, he became involved with an older man, a real-estate developer who brought him to California where he was building homes in a luxurious section of Los Angeles. Jack and his friend lived in one of the luxury homes, and in the summer of 1967, Jack was taking courses in anthropology at UCLA, working part time at a gas station and part time at a hamburger stand at the beach, the Sorrento Grill, and bit-part actor with MGM. He had a red Corvette convertible, a motorcycle and a '47 Mercury woody station wagon that he used when he went surfing. He loved living in Beverly Hills, loved his red Corvette.The only star he really wanted to meet was Rock Hudson.By 1971, Jack Coates had finished college and was in full-time residence at the Castle, but he was growing restless. He did not want to spend his life as the consort of a movie star, with no identity of his own. He did not want to be, as his friends put it, "Rock Hudson's wife." He decided he would leave and go to graduate school in anthropology.At the end of 1971, Jack Coates packed his bags and returned to his family in Arizona.After broke up with Rock Hudson, his lover is Burbank champion diver Steve Del Re.
