Meta Wilde, a longtime Hollywood script superviser who chronicled her affair with William Faulkner in a book, died on Tuesday while visiting relatives in Kansas City. She was 86.The cause was pneumonia, said a statement from the Hollywood group Women in Film. She had been living in Los Angeles.Ms. Wilde was born in Memphis and trained as a classical pianist. She arrived in Hollywood in the 1930's and began her career as a secretary to the director Howard Hawks. While working as a script superviser on the 1936 film "The Road to Glory, " for which Faulkner was a co-writer, she and the author began an 18-year affair that she later described in "A Loving Gentleman: The Love Story of William Faulkner and Meta Carpenter Wilde, " a 1976 best seller she wrote with Orin Borsten.Ms. Wilde was the script superviser on more than 200 Hollywood films and is credited with formulating a system of notation in script supervision. Her credits include "Prizzi's Honor, " "Who's Afraid of v*rginia Woolf?" and "The Graduate."She is survived by her husband, Arthur.
