Short Biography
Jaime “Vyal” Reyes, aka. Vyal One, is a Los Angeles graffiti artist who began painting in the late 80’s. His art was first featured in a gallery show in 1993, after which he began to pursue art professionally. In 2010 and 2011, he won the Estria Graffiti Battle. Vyal was also a finalist in Red Bull’s Latagrafica contest, which celebrates the Latino art community. The colorful Chicano murals representing life, death, and the hardship of the people was one of Vyal’s inspirations. He is now considered a top graffiti artist in LA, and his art has been on display in galleries all over the US, as well as Germany, Mexico, and Israel. He conducts a weekly workshop helping artists refine their aerosol techniques. He also has a line of shirts called Graffiti Saved My Life. The recurring theme of eyes in Vyal’s art comes from his last name, Reyes. If you remove the first and last letters, you are left with “eye”.“I’ve always been into eyes since a little kid, ” Vyal says, “I’d always draw eyes and get bored with the rest of it.”His advice to young artists is, “Find your own way, find your own style.... what’s important is developing and pushing yourself beyond your comfort level... Don’t give up. You should be doing art because it is something inside of you that you need to do.”[Source:
