Short Biography

Patrick Floyd Jarvis "Pat" Garrett (June 5, 1850 – February 29, 1908) was an American Old West lawman, bartender and customs agent who became renowned for killing Billy the Kid. He was also the sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico as well as Doña Ana County, New Mexico. He was drafted into service a as sheriff both times. Garrett coauthored a book about Billy the Kid that is still found in libraries worldwide. For a generation after the Kid's death, Garrett's book was used by historians as a factual account of the life of Billy the Kid; however, historians have since found in his book many embellishments and inconsistencies with other accounts of the outlaw's life. Pat Garrett also became one of President Theodore Roosevelt's three "White House Gunfighters" (Bat Masterson and Ben Daniels were the other two) when Roosevelt appointed him Collector of Customs in El Paso. Garrett was murdered under circumstances that remain both mysterious and controversial. Garrett has been the subject of two major biographies that were published in 1974 and 2010.
