Biography by Hans J. WollsteinA rather plain-looking leading lady of the 1910s, Jane Gail became a star with IMP, the forerunner of Universal. Usually cast as rather defenseless heroines, she gained worldwide fame as Dr. Jekyll's (King Baggot) imperiled fiancée in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1913) and that same year, played the heroine Mary Barton in the studio's first major undertaking, the still extant Traffic in Souls. She was the princess in The Prisoner of Zenda (1915), filmed in England by George Loane Tucker, and played royalty of a different kind in the underwater spectacular 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916). The latter, partially filmed in the Bahamas, has been preserved but Gail's acting talents hardly impress. Like most of her contemporaries, her career waned in the latter part of the 1910s.Read more at
